Be N-ice Lolly Lovers

Socially engaged intervention artwork

Commissioned by Coastal Currents arts festival + V&A Museum

The theme of ‘meltdown’ - on both an individual and a global level - resonates in Hastings. The town has a high rate of people suffering from mental health issues, and it is on the front line of UK climate change.

Through creative workshops with local groups unique messages were created amplifying the voices of underrepresented people and speaking up for up for the planet. Find out more about the workshops HERE.

The project culminated on the opening night of Coastal Currents with a mobile rave and illuminated bike ride. Over one hundred cyclists followed my hand-crafted lolly van / sound system to help distribute ice lollies with our playful and poetic messages engraved on the sticks.

We also pedalled into the V&A as part of Food: Bigger Than The Plate and The Great Exhibition Road Festival. Through the power of popsicles people were able to find out how they can live more sustainable lifestyles in six easy steps:

Step 1: Eat more ice-cream. Say bye bye to beef. ⁣⁣⁣
Step 2: Food waste sucks. Compost it.⁣⁣⁣
Step 3: Buy less. Making food is fab.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣Step 4: Small is sweet. Steer clear of supermarkets.⁣⁣⁣
⁣Step 5: Eat seasonally. Flying in fruit ain’t cool.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣Step 6: Grow your own. Anything is popsicle.⁣⁣⁣
