Intuition Maps

Socially engaged, intervention artwork and AI

Commissioned by Fermynwoods Contemporary Art

Intuition Maps is a co-created artwork which invites participants and visitors to reflect on animal instincts - that of the more-than-human world and their own. It does this in the context of climate change adaptation, observing the instinctive mass movement of people and animals, seeking to draw comparisons between the two. It aims to generate a sense connectedness with each other and the more-than-human world, whilst seeding new narratives around empathy, solidarity and hope - much needed in today’s political landscape.

Through collaboration with Northamptonshire communities, local migratory species, research partners and a custom AI algorithm, I was able to analyse and combine data to create new, collective patterns - revealing that we’re not so different to migratory birds and insects …or each other.

The resulting artwork is a new and unexpected woodland walking route guided by iconic waymarks. The waymarks help visitors to tread in the footsteps of the project’s multi-species participants and to tune into their own intuition, whilst providing sanctuary for a local migratory butterfly species (the red admiral) which now, due to our changing climate, overwinters in the UK.

I invite you to continue building on the process and patterns that have come before, to forge your own paths and share traces of this, from hand-drawn maps and notes documenting environmental conditions, to GPS coordinates and more.
