COEXISTENCE

Immersive, multimedia, installation artwork

Commissioned by Threshold Studios for Frequency International Festival of Digital Culture

Climb inside “COEXISTENCE” — an immersive, multi-media, multi-sensory installation, inspired by sacred spaces and architecture designed for wildlife.

COEXISTENCE connects participants with myth, machine and the more-than-human, inviting us to extend our bodies, minds and dreams into wild, new places…

Technology is part of our evolutionary road map and a tool for expanding the horizons of our creative potential - it is, as Arthur C Clarke put it, indistinguishable from magic. But magic is a powerful tool - should it not be considered sacred? Should we not be initiated before unleashing its God-like potential for both creation and destruction?

Playful yet unsettling, COEXISTENCE reimagines ritual and mythology through the creation of a mystical, animistic experience and the communion of more-than-human and machine intelligence. It asks, how might our creativity and emerging technology be used in service to the more-than-human world? And how might we radically co-design for our collective destiny?

COEXISTENCE tests collaborative consultation models with students and civic audiences, creating a dialogic experience. Visitors were given a 'sermon' - with a kawaii-pagan aesthetic, containing sacred, ceremonial instructions for a speculative symbiocene - and invited to consider the power of intention, imagining their visions of COEXISTENCE in partnership with an AI algorithm. Take a look at our online gallery to see the hundreds of images generated over the course of the festival or see a small selection below.

Encouraging inter-species participation, we also installed miniature versions of COEXISTENCE around the site.
